The Filter Method
The Filter Method is the core reading and writing approach developed within the Bee Writing Lab. It emerged through sustained study of literature, long-term teaching practice, and the author’s own writing process, and has been refined through its ongoing use in workshops and Labs.
Each session focuses on a specific narrative element or story principle. The concept is first introduced in clear theoretical terms and then explored through close reading of literary texts, using a defined “filter” that reveals how the element functions within the work.
Through this movement between theory and practice, narrative principles are gradually absorbed and become part of the writer’s way of seeing and shaping their work.
A distilled version of the method is also available as a standalone booklet. Structured as a series of concise conceptual filters, it functions as a practical and inspirational tool.
The booklet supports the work done in the Labs by offering a point of reference, but it does not replace the depth of understanding that develops through live practice, discussion, and shared attention.
